Gilly Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

Trine's Sam Gilly has been named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men's Track & Field / Cross Country Team.

Gilly was named to the first-team for Academic District 7, which includes Division III schools in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. The District 7 team includes 11 student-athletes who competed in track and field or cross country. The CoSIDA Academic All-District? teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Gilly will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in June.

Gilly excelled in the classroom at Trine, earning a 3.89 GPA in sports management. He has been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times for achieving at least a 3.50 G.P.A and earning a varsity letter in a MIAA-sponsored sport. Gilly was one of four Trine students to score in the 90th percentile or higher on the Major Field Test, a national assessment test for students in the business field. Gilly also made numerous appearances on Trine University's president's list.

All-America honors in the weight throw this winter highlighted an outstanding indoor campaign for Gilly. The senior placed eighth at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships to earn the honor. Gilly's indoor campaign also included Field MVP honors in helping Trine win the inaugural MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. He also earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors and was named a MIAA Field Athlete of the Week.

The outdoor campaign saw Gilly earn USTFCCCA All-Region honors as well as All-MIAA First Team recognition. Gilly was the conference's champion in the hammer throw. His hammer throw performance ranked 27th in the nation, but fell just short of a second national championship bid during the 2015-16 school year.

The Academic All-District? teams include student-athletes representing eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division All-America? Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
