Martin named MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week

2016 Jan 4

Trine's Hayley Martin has been named the MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) averaged 17.7 points per game on 51 percent shooting in leading the Thunder to three wins last week. The sophomore added 6.7 rebounds and two blocks per contest. Martin was named to the All-Tournament Team as she helped lead Trine to two victories to win the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament at Wilmington College. She is being named Player of the Week for the second time this season.

A 27-point, nine-rebound, three-block effort in a victory over Berea in game one of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament highlighted Martin's efforts on the week. She followed that up 10 points, six rebounds, three blocks and a career-high three assists in the championship game. Martin also scored 16 points in a one-point victory over Manchester.

Martin came through when it mattered most last week, scoring 37 of her 53 points in the second half of games. She is currently tied for third in the MIAA in scoring average, putting up 15.4 points per game. Martin also ranks second in the MIAA in free throw percentage, third in blocks and eighth in field goal percentage.

Trine has won six-straight games to improve its record to 9-3. The winning-streak is tied for the team's longest since joining NCAA Division III in 2004.

The Thunder have a showdown looming with defending MIAA-Champion and 11th-ranked Calvin on the road this Wednesday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
