Zak's debut season resulted in the freshman earning recognition for his performance in the 800-meter run. Zak's top time of 1:52.57 in North Central College's Gregory Final Qualifier was good enough for the 41st-best performance in the nation. Zak placed sixth in the event at MIAA Field Day.
