Trine education majors participate in school beautification

2017 May 10

Several Trine University education majors took part in Outreach to Teach, an event sponsored by the Indiana Student Education Association (ISEA) on April 8.

The purpose of Outreach to Teach was to rehabilitate and beautify an elementary school in the state of Indiana. The ISEA board selected Evans Elementary School in Evansville, and more than 200 students total participated.

Mikaela Gerba, a senior social studies education major from Highland who also serves as president of ISEA, led the event and oversaw the implementation of project ideas. Projects included building a deck and pergola, installing benches and refurbishing the stage in the school auditorium, as well as general landscaping, several painting projects and cleanup.

Other Trine students who participated were Adam Miller, a senior elementary education major from Fort Wayne; Jake Stevens, a junior math education major from Medaryville; Kyle McGrew, a senior math education major from East Tawas, Michigan; and Jason Clune, a freshman elementary/special education major from Meadville, Pennsylvania.

"It was wonderful seeing hundreds of future and current educators get together and improve a school in just one day," said McGrew, who said he worked with landscaping in the school's inner court yard. "It was amazing and I hope that I will be able to continue to participate in the future."
