BO JACKSON GIVES BACK AT TRINE SCHOLARSHIP GALA

Angola, IN (02/16/2024) — ANGOLA, Indiana - It was a successful celebration for both Bo Jackson and supporters of Trine University as the annual Scholarship Gala raised nearly $2 million on Feb. 10, the largest amount raised since the event's inception in 2004. The renowned athlete left the event not only knowing Trine, but leaving a lasting impact on the university and on those who heard him speak.

Making an impact Keynote speaker Bo Jackson, famed multisport professional athlete, started his remarks by acknowledging how touched he was by the words from the student speaker, Nevaeh Ortiz-Cruz, who shared her story of perseverance and how Trine University, and its generous donors, changed her life. Jackson shared personal and heartful stories about childhood hardships, receiving his first pair of shoes, his path to professional sports, losing his mother, being a dad and grandfather and a question-and-answer session. He challenged the audience and students to always strive to reach the next level and encouraged them to live life to the fullest by giving back.

As Jackson concluded his speech, he energized the crowd by telling them the goal of the event was to raise money and that he wanted to do his part in contributing to Trine's scholarship fund. Solidifying his intentions and commitment, he unexpectedly added a live auction item for an overnight trip for four individuals to accompany him to a hunting lodge in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After the live auction started, he doubled it and two bidders left winners of the generous and unforgettable weekend.

The Gala also served as a reunion for many of the over 430 guests who gathered in the dashingly decorated Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Inc. Athletics and Recreation Center.

Generous support for Trine Trine University's supporters made an influential impact contributing toward scholarships and Books and Beyond through sponsorships, donations, silent auctions, and a live auction conducted by Trine student and fourth generation auctioneer, Michael Kruse. Kruse is a junior management major from Auburn, IN.

The total raised included a $300,000 matching gift towards Books and Beyond from Trine board chair and alumnus Dr. Rick L. James, his wife, Dr. Vicki L. James, and The James Foundation, Inc., as they have for a number of years. The Books and Beyond scholarship fund assists with books and other student expenses not typically covered by financial aid.

"We are so grateful for everyone who attended and financially supported the event," said Gretchen M. Miller, senior vice president and chief operating officer. "Thank you for your generosity in helping keep the cost of a quality private education affordable for our deserving students. You have positively impacted our students' educational journeys and their lives."

The Scholarship Gala has raised millions of dollars for Trine University student scholarships. Scholarship funds are a critical part of allowing students to attend Trine, as 99% of undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid.

Adding Value Video testimonials from Trine University students who received scholarship aid shared stories of how their Trine education and campus experience will help them add value to the community, workplace and the people around them.

Ortiz-Cruz, a senior majoring in athletics and recreation, also offered remarks prior to Jackson's speech. She inspired attendees at the event by speaking about the strength of family, courage and commitment.
