High school students earn math awards at Trine competition

ANGOLA, Ind. (03/05/2025) — More than 150 students representing 18 area high schools took part in Trine University's 48th annual Mathematics Competition on Feb. 26.

The competition, which included schools from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, consisted of individual and team events for students, with first through third places recognized in both categories. Cash awards were given to the teachers of the top three teams to be used toward math education at their school.

A team from Saint Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana, consisting of Bryan Onofre-Vivar, John Morin, Theodore Berente and Run Li, won first place, earning renewable $3,000 scholarships toward tuition at Trine University for each member and a $500 cash award for teacher Brett Goodrich.

Anthony Scott, Lilith Schommer-Pries, McKenna Cain and Joshua Oh of Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, earned second-place honors, providing a $250 cash award for teacher Paul McClelland.

A team from Canterbury High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, made up of Cameron Fullhart, Drake Steffy, Dayoung Kim and Gabi Zambrano, took third place. Teacher Erion Clark received a $125 cash prize for that placement.

Joshua Oh of Penn High School won the top individual award, earning a renewable $5,000 scholarship toward tuition at Trine University. Second place went to Doyoung Kim of Canterbury and third went to Preston Gascho of Northridge.

Penn High School swept the individual elementary awards, with Aidan Lee taking first, Lilith Schommer-Pries taking second and Emma Wei taking third.
