Indiana Teacher of the Year speaking at Trine on April 11

ANGOLA (03/12/2019) — Jerome Flewelling, 2018 Indiana Teacher of the Year, will encourage education students and educators to develop and implement techniques that will engage their students during an April 11 presentation at Trine University.

"Step into Your Courage" will be held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the university's Fabiani Theatre, and is free and open to the public.

"In this message, I explain how my class evolved from a traditional lecture/lab/test class to a class that engages students by cultivating curiosity, making the curriculum relevant, upping the level of rigor and encouraging empathy," Flewelling said. "It includes anecdotes, examples and, depending on the time, several different activities."

Flewelling is on a one-year sabbatical this school year, working for the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) by speaking to education majors in colleges and serving on a state committee recommending changes to science education. He teaches AP Physics, mechanics and chemistry at Crown Point High School, and his more-than-20-year career included teaching physics and astronomy at Frankton Junior/Senior High School.

After he was named Teacher of the Year for Indiana, he represented the state in the national Teacher of the Year competition. Other awards throughout his career have included being named Indiana Physics Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Physics Teachers, Most Influential Teacher, and Crown Point Teacher of the Year.

Flewelling also assists with extracurricular activities, including theater and Spell Bowl.
