Model UN offers students special opportunity to learn, network

ANGOLA (02/21/2019) — Area high school and college students are invited to participate in a Model United Nations Conference to be held on the main campus of Trine University from May 11-12.

Held around the world, Model United Nations Conferences are replicas of the actual United Nations, with each participant serving as a delegate of a nation. Delegates will be assigned to committees in order to focus on and debate an ongoing world issue. Each delegate aims to get the resolution best for his or her country passed by the United Nations.

Topics for the Model UN will include:

UNHRC (Human Rights Council): Human rights in the Middle East

UNEP (United Nations Environment Program): Reviewing "Division of environmental law and conventions" (DELC)

DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee): Global nuclear weapon proliferation

ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council): Formation of the Kurdish state

UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime): Guatemala Drug Crisis

IP (International Press): Reporters and photographers

The event offers students the opportunity to meet and listen to experts and diplomats from Washington D.C., learning more about what is happening in the world today and how it impacts all of us. Among the experts participating will be Jeff Lilley, director of monitoring and evaluation at American Councils, a nonprofit organization that administers the FLEX and YES high school exchange programs.

The types of experiences offered at the Model UN make students more attractive to potential colleges, scholarship committees and other opportunities. Students also are able to make connections from across the nation.

Mornings will include debate of the various topics, while Saturday evening will feature a live DJ party.

Fee for the Model UN is $25.

Dress for the Model UN is business casual, with no jeans or shorts allowed. Each participant will be given personalized material to help him or her research topics and countries.

The Model UN is also looking for students to serve as student ambassadors, to help publicize and market the event. Student ambassadors, selected by merit, get the opportunity to be part of the organizing process along with being a delegate. Those who get 15 delegates to register can register for free, and will receive a certificate of excellence.
