Next Trine symposium looks at fanfiction

ANGOLA (11/08/2018) — A fanfiction author will explore the genre and its growing popularity in today's media in the next installment of Trine University's Humanities Symposia.

Cynthia Bowen, who serves as a reference and outreach librarian at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, will guide her audience through a discussion on the realities of fanfiction and the reasoning behind written fan works.

Beginning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Wells Theater inside Taylor Hall, "Let Me Tell You a Story … Fanfic from a Writer's Perspective" is free and open to the public, but seating is strictly limited to 75.

"Some of the appeal of both reading and writing fanfic is that it's about characters and settings that I enjoy and that other people are familiar with, too," stated Bowen. "It's a great way to experiment with things like tropes and genres and point of view, and get feedback from readers about your work."

In her presentation, Bowen will explore three different fandoms (Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe) as a backdrop to discuss some of the what and why of written fan works.

The Humanities Symposia is presented by Trine's Department of Humanities and Communication. For more information, contact Jeanette Goddard, assistant professor in the Department of Humanities and Communication, at (260) 665-4730 or goddardj@trine.edu.
