Trine ESL faculty present at conference
CHICAGO (04/05/2018) — On March 28-30, three members of Trine University's English as a Second Language (ESL) faculty attended the International TESOL (Teachers of English to Students of Other Languages) Conference in Chicago, where they gave five presentations.
On Wednesday, Gail Lugo, English as a Second Language program director, Graham Reeves, English as a Second Language assistant director, and Leah Jenkins, adjunct professor, gave a panel presentation entitled "Dialogues Nobody Wants to Have," which was followed directly by their poster presentation, "I Don't Wanna Talk about That!" Both presentations were about how to open up conversations on sensitive topics that people often feel uncomfortable discussing, but that are very important for international students to know about, including personal hygiene, restroom etiquette and sexual harassment.
On Thursday, the three teamed up with Leo Schmitt, associate professor from the New School in New York City, to present "Low Enrollment Changes Everything," a panel presentation outlining past enrollment trends of international students and ways for ESL programs to make the best of, and hopefully survive, these low enrollment times.
On Friday, the team gave two poster presentations simultaneously: "No Boys Allowed," which was about creating an all-female international women's group, and "Building a Flexible Curriculum."
