Trine expanding Carew Street health sciences facilities

FORT WAYNE (03/21/2019) — Trine University and Parkview Health have reached an agreement for the university to expand its Health Sciences Education Center in Fort Wayne into 1818 Carew St., adjacent to Trine's existing facility.

The university will occupy 8,900 square feet of space in what formerly was an eye surgery center. The new facility will house Trine University's surgical technology program, which will launch this fall, as well as future programs planned in Trine's Rinker-Ross School of Health Sciences.

"Parkview Health has been a key partner by not only providing space, but by offering invaluable guidance and expertise as Trine University has continued to develop our health sciences degree programs," said Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., Trine University president. "As Trine University continues on its multi-year health sciences program expansion, we look forward to our continued partnership with Parkview to help meet the healthcare needs of the northeast Indiana region."

Beginning the week of March 18, the space will be renovated to include two state-of-the-art operating rooms, classrooms, locker rooms, a supply room, a sterile processing department with a large autoclave, a lounge and faculty offices, in addition to the existing atrium. The renovation will be complete by Aug. 1.

"This space was previously set up for surgery, making it a perfect home for Trine University's new surgical technology program," said Max Baumgartner, Ph.D., dean of the Rinker-Ross School of Health Sciences. "We are excited as we look forward to the opening of this new facility, and to moving forward with this step in the expansion of health sciences at Trine University."

"This new facility gives Trine University surgical technology students the opportunity from the beginning of their program to train in surgical suites that incorporate the latest technology," said Jennifer Lloyd, director of the surgical technology program at Trine. "Combined with our comprehensive curriculum and the personal attention that is a hallmark of all Trine programs, graduates will have the training and experience necessary for a successful surgical technology career."

Trine University opened its current Health Sciences Education Center at 1819 Carew St. on the Randallia campus of Parkview Health in 2013. The center is home to Trine University's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) programs.

In October, the university announced it will expand its health sciences programs in Fort Wayne over the next several years. In addition to increasing the sizes of its DPT and MPAS programs and launching surgical technology, Trine plans to add Physical Therapist Assistant, Master of Applied Health Sciences, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, RN to BSN, Radiologic Technology and Master of Speech Language Pathology programs.
