Trine's ASCE chapter honored among top 5% worldwide

ANGOLA (04/08/2019) — Trine University's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has received a Certificate of Commendation from the national organization for its work and achievements last year.

The distinction is earned by only the top 5% of all student organizations.

In a letter addressed to Trine chapter advisor TJ Murphy, Leslie Payne, director of student and younger member programs for ASCE, stated, "The Chapter's accomplishments reflect the enthusiasm and hard work of your student officers and members, as well as your fine guidance as faculty advisor. You, the practitioner advisors, and every individual who had a part in this endeavor should be justifiably proud of his or her contribution to the development of the future of civil engineering."

"This is a great honor for the Reiners Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering," said A. Allen Hersel, Ph.D., dean of the Allen School of Engineering and Technology. "ASCE student chapters represent elite civil engineering programs worldwide, and this award recognizes the talent, dedication and effort put forth by student civil engineers and faculty at Trine University."

Each year, approximately 380 ASCE student chapters around the world submit an annual report for review by the ASCE's Committee on Student Members, made up primarily of practicing civil engineers and faculty from around the United States. The report describes chapters' participation in national, state and local activities; their ability to set and meet goals; the percentage of department students who are members of the chapter; their ability to maintain a budget and other items. Certificates of Commendation are awarded to those chapters judged to be in the top 5%.
