Trine's Overlooked Film Festival returns Feb. 22

Angola, IN (02/12/2018) — Trine University's Overlooked Film Festival begins Thursday, Feb. 22, and will continue through Thursday, Apr. 5.

The Overlooked Film Festival gives members of Trine's local community the opportunity to watch free films that were not released locally or that were generally "overlooked" at the time of their release. All films will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Fabiani Theatre in the Rick L. and Vicki L. James University Center.

The film festival is one of Trine's major outreaches to the community, bringing everyone together once a week to enjoy a film. The event's audience is a mix of students, community members, and Trine faculty and staff.

This season's festival theme is "Battle Lines," which is displayed through the intense conflicts of each film.

"Whether it's between family, on the tennis court, off the ice, in the heat of the fire, or simply trying to find acceptance from a world that rejects you-this semester our films tackle battle lines wherever they may fall, and how we overcome them in very different manners," stated Justin Young, director of the film festival and assistant professor in Trine's Department of Humanities and Communication.

Sponsored by the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Humanities Institute and the Department of Humanities and Communication, the films scheduled for viewing are:

Feb. 22 - "Wind River." In this thrilling crime drama, an FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) and a professional hunter (Jeremy Renner) combine forces to track down a killer. Rated R.

Mar. 1 - "Battle of the Sexes." This film tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) that left the world and those striving for equality breathless. Rated PG-13.

Mar. 15 - "Only the Brave." When a historic wildfire threatens a town, an elite group of firefighters known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots risk everything to save it. This true story features Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Connelly. Rated PG-13.

Mar. 22 - "Lady Bird." In this coming-of-age tale, a high school senior named Lady Bird McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) must battle her way through peers, romance, college applications and her mom. Rated R.

Mar. 29 - "I, Tonya." Competitive ice skater Tonya Harding is perhaps the most infamous name in the history of sports. While rising among the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, her future in the sport is threatened when her ex-husband intervenes. Rated R.

Apr. 5 - "The Greatest Showman." This musical follows the life of P.T. Barnum, one of the greatest promoters in entertainment history, and his part in the birth of show business. Rated PG.

In addition to the free movies, popcorn and drinks may be purchased outside of Fabiani Theatre from the sisters of Phi Sigma sorority. Fabiani seats 320 guests, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early if they have specific seating preferences.
