Trine students recognized as Steel Intern Scholars

ANGOLA (12/05/2018) — Two Trine University seniors were recognized as 2018 Steel Intern Scholars in a recent edition of the Iron & Steel Technology, the magazine for the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST).

Zachary Shepard from Angola, Indiana, and Landon Pearson, from Churubusco, Indiana, served internships over the summer and received $6,000 scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year. Both are mechanical engineering majors.

Shepard served as a product and project engineering intern at the Metal Technologies Inc. Auburn Casting Facility and Corporate Office, working on projects within all different departments of its iron foundry.

Pearson was an intern mechanical engineer at Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) in Butler, Indiana. He plans to work in the steel industry after graduating from Trine.

It was the third time Pearson received the award.

To qualify for AIST scholarships, students must major in one of the following engineering/engineering technology majors: metallurgy, materials science, electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial, environmental or computer science. Applicants complete an essay and provide recommendation letters expressing a strong interest in the iron and steel industry.

A nonprofit organization with 18,000 members from more than 70 countries, the Association for Iron & Steel Technology seeks to advance the technical development, production, processing and application of iron and steel.
