Nine Named to All-MIAA Football Teams
Nine members of the Trine University football team have been named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the association announced today. Three members of the team were selected to the first team while six made an appearance on the second team. Jamon Gibson was the lone defensive member of the Thunder to earn first team honors. The senior was once again a monster on the edge, leading the team with 8.5 sacks and finish the conference season second in the MIAA with 6.5. He broke the Trine career record for sacks during the season and added to that total to finish his career with 24. Gibson led the conference with 13 tackles for a loss during conference play while leading the team overall with 16.5. He also totaled two interceptions. Alexander Lewis and Jackson Linback both represented the Thunder on first team offense after their time in the trenches as members of the starting offensive line. The two seniors anchored the line that helped the team average 159 rushing yards per game, up to 166.7 during just conference games, while allowing just 1.4 sacks per game, with a total of 14. Three members of the team represented the offensive side of the ball on second team, including running back Xaine Kirby and wide receivers Brandon Kline and Kale Lawson. Kirby led the team with 710 yards rushing during the season. In conference play he finished with 392, fourth most among MIAA runners, for an average of 65.3 yards per game, third best. He averaged 5.1 yards per carry during MIAA play, tied for third on the leaderboard. Kline and Lawson both turned in top-ten performances during MIAA play. Lawson ended those games with 506 yards and an average of 84.3 yards per game, both fourth best in the conference. His 18.1 yards per catch was third best. Kline finished with 356 yards for 59.3 yards per game, both eighth best in the MIAA. His 13.2 yards per catch was tenth in the conference. The final three selections to second team all came on the defensive side of the ball, with a player representing the team at each level. The lone defensive back to be recognized for the team was senior Joseph Johnson. He finished the conference portion of the season with 50 tackles, fourth most in the conference. He led the team with 76 tackles for the entire season and forced a pair of fumbles, also a team high. In the middle of the defense, Tucker Hasselman was named one of the linebacker selections to second team. The junior finished the season with 51 tackles the second most on the team. His 30 tackles during conference play were top-30 in the conference. Kendall Himes rounded out the delegation from his interior line spot. The senior finished the season with 45 tackles, third most on the team. He added five sacks, second most on the team, and seven tackles for a loss, third best.

Organ Named Star of the Week by NCHA
The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) has announced their Three Stars of the Week, with junior Tim Organ of Lambertville, Michigan, representing the Trine University men's hockey program. Before the beginning of the season, the NCHA announced that rather than choosing an offensive and defensive player of the week they would instead select the three starts of the week, mirroring the traditional three stars of the game. Organ becomes the first member of the Thunder to earn the new award. It is the first time that he has earned any NCHA weekly award. Organ helped lead the way for Trine to secure two wins over the University of Dubuque by scoring a team-high five points. On Friday, Nov. 3, he assisted on the game winning goal before scoring his own in the third period. Then on Saturday he finished the night with another goal and two assists.

Madison Dominick Named Second Team All-MIAA
Madison Dominick of the Trine University women's volleyball team has earned Second Team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) honors following a breakout season. It is her first career all-conference award. Dominick, a junior outside hitter from Swartz Creek, Michigan, had 2.68 kills per set during the MIAA season, good for ninth in the league. In total, Dominick secured 75 kills in her eight matches and 28 sets played as well as 15 blocks (one solo). In the MIAA opener versus Adrian College, Dominick secured a new career-high with 17 kills. This closed a run of four consecutive matches with double-digit kill numbers. She would go on a similar scoring spree in the final stretch of the 2023 season with 15 kills and 11 kills in the regular season finale matches against Alma College and The University of Olivet as well as 10 more in the MIAA Tournament First Round contest at Adrian. Throughout the season, Dominick led a balanced Thunder offense with 189 kills (2.36 kills per set). She hit .191 with 66 digs, 53 blocks (four solo), eight assists and two aces. She had one double-double this season against Grove City College. Dominick threw down 14 kills and dug out 12 opposing attacks.

Sidney Wagner Named D3hoops.com Preseason All-American
Junior guard Sidney Wagner of the Trine University women's basketball team has been selected to the 2023-24 D3hoops.com Women's Basketball Preseason All-America team. Wagner was selected as a Second Team All-American heading into the season. The Warsaw, Indiana native was a D3hoops.com Third Team All-American one season ago following a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season championship and appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Wagner was also First Team All-Region in 2022-23 as well as the MIAA Most Valuable Player, the second in school history. Wagner appeared in all 30 games and made 20 starts for the Thunder as a sophomore. She averaged 14.9 points per game to lead the team and was a stout 49.4% from the field and 37.4% from deep. Along with her scoring numbers, Wagner secured an average of 4.7 rebounds per game, distributed 2.7 assists per game and recorded 2.2 steals per game. As a team, Trine went 23-7 overall with NCAA Tournament wins against Washington University out of Missouri and Loras College in Iowa. The Thunder were 14-2 in conference play last season and 10-2 inside the MTI Center.

Five from Men's Soccer Selected to All-MIAA Teams
Prior to the start of the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Tournament Semifinal Round, the conference unveiled the All-MIAA recipients for their work in the conference season. The Thunder had five All-MIAA honorees, tied for the most selections in program history in a single year. Sophomore midfielder Jarick Aguilar and sophomore defender Liam Zimmerman represented Trine on the Second Team All-MIAA, while sophomore defender Gavin Hardy, senior midfielder Francesco Mazzei and senior forward Tyler Murphy were chosen as First Team All-MIAA members. Murphy was also selected to receive the Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema Award. It is presented annually to an MIAA men's soccer senior for contributions to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in athletics and academics. Murphy, from Greenfield, Indiana, is team captain for the Thunder and holds a grade point average of 3.957 in Trine's Design, Engineering and Technology program. He is the program's leading scorer in the NCAA DIII era with 44 goals and 97 points in his career and holds the Trine men's soccer record for game-winning goals with 15. His career accolades include 2022 CSC First Team Academic All-American, 2021 USC All-Region, 2021 First Team All-MIAA, 2020 Second Team All-MIAA, and seven-time MIAA Athlete of the Week. On the field, Murphy has scored a team-high nine goals in 2023, highlighted by a hat trick in the 4-3 victory against Kenyon College and a game-winning goal versus Hope College to help clinch the two-seed in the MIAA standings. He is three points away from becoming just the second Trine men's soccer player to reach 100 career points and he is five goals away from tying the program's all-time record in goals scored dating back to the NAIA days. The senior Mazzei from Dearborn, Michigan was named First Team All-MIAA for the second consecutive season. He has started in all 16 matches in the Thunder midfield and had a key assist in a conference win against The University of Olivet. Contributing to both the offense and the defense, Mazzei helped the team with five shutouts in 2023, three coming in the conference slate. The Holland, Michigan native, Hardy was the third Trine student-athlete tabbed to the First Team All-MIAA after notching Second Team All-MIAA honors as a freshman one year ago. He was second on the team with five goals scored, most coming off of set pieces where he was able to use his height to his advantage. Three of Hardy's five goals scored came during the MIAA campaign, including the game-tying score against Kalamazoo College in a 1-1 draw. Zimmerman, a sophomore from Clarkston, Michigan, was all over the pitch with two goals and four assists in the conference season from the back row to earn his first career Second Team All-MIAA award. The match against Olivet saw Zimmerman score a goal and record an assist and he was involved in scores in five of the seven MIAA matches. His six assists in 2023 leads the team. For the first time in his career, the sophomore from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Aguilar was selected as a Second Team All-MIAA member following his performance on the pitch in 2023. Aguilar sent home what would be the game-winning goal in the team's 3-2 victory against Olivet earlier this season. On the defensive side of the ball, he was a part of five total shutouts.

Gibson Named MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week

It was the first time in Gibson's career to take home the award. Gibson, of Toledo, Ohio, led the defensive effort the prior weekend as the Thunder secured a come from behind, 34-14 victory over Adrian College in the 2023 edition of the Border Brawl. He finished with team-high totals in tackles (8), tackles for a loss (4.5) and sacks (2.5). He also recorded a pair of quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. One of those quarterback hurries changed the momentum of the game. Down 14-0 with minutes left in the half, the defense forced a third and nine play for the Bulldogs. Gibson's hit on the quarterback ended the drive when the ball sailed high and ended in an interception. His forced fumble in the fourth quarter sealed the game, ending in a defensive touchdown for Trine. Gibson also ended the day as the new career sack leader at Trine, with 21.

Mark Civanich Wins MIAA Athlete of the Week Award for the Second Time This Season
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) named senior Mark Civanich of the Trine University men's golf team as the Athlete of the Week on Oct. 30 following his performance at the Region V Preview the prior week. Civanich of Valparaiso, Indiana, tied for fourth overall with a two-day total of 149. He turned in a 75 in the first round and shaved one more stroke off his scorecard on day two with a 74 at the very tough Warren Golf course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. An eagle highlighted his day in round one and he collected four birdies in total in second round action. It was the second time in the 2023 fall that Civanich had been tabbed MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week and the seventh time in his career he was won the award.

Trine Nabs Four All-MIAA Honorees at Conference Championship Meet
The Trine University men's cross country team took the course at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships on Oct. 28 and brought home a third-place team finish. Trine had four members of their men's team named All-MIAA. Sophomore Ryan Hoopingarner of Mishawaka, Indiana, was the lone representative on the All-MIAA First Team with a fifth-place time of 24:36.4, a new career-best. He is the first All-MIAA First Team member since 2019. Junior Joseph Packard of Kokomo, Indiana, and freshman Max VanHuis of Holland, Miichigan, were 11th (25:06.6) and 12th (25:09.0) overall to score two of the slots on the All-MIAA Second Team. Each of them topped their own previous best times as well in the 8K. Junior Eli Lantz of Fort Wayne was scored in 15th to grab Trine's final All-MIAA selection on the Second Team at 25:20.6 (career-best). Packard and Lantz were each All-MIAA Second Team in 2022 and now have two postseason all-conference awards to their names.

Robison Receives Athlete of the Week Honors
Sophomore Abby Robison of Dayton, Ohio, was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Oct. 23. It is the third time this season that a Thunder student-athlete was named athlete of the week. It was the second time this season and third overall for Robison. Trine started the prior week with a lopsided 5-0 victory over Alma College which saw Robison tally a goal and an assist. Her assist came on the game winning goal. Then Robison scored the team's lone goal against Albion College. The shot tied the game at one and eventually secured a crucial point toward the league standings.

Liam Zimmerman Honored as MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week
Sophomore defender Liam Zimmerman of the Trine University men's soccer team was tabbed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week on Oct. 16. It wa his first career MIAA Athlete of the Week award. Zimmerman, a native of Clarkston, Michigan, helped the Thunder pick up two conference wins the prior week versus Olivet College and at Albion College. Trine was victorious 3-2 over the Comets and picked up a 1-0 victory against the Britons. In the first win of the week, Zimmerman scored one goal and added an assist for three points individually. He was one of four players to be on the pitch for all 90 minutes in the match as well. His corner kick in the 35th minute setup teammate Gavin Hardy for the team's only first half goal. It is his fourth assist of the year. He went on to score his second goal in 2023 in the 59th minute to put Trine back in front. The Thunder put together a shutout win on the road in their second conference match of the week with Zimmerman helping the defense to allow just three shots on goal. The total shot differential in the match was 19-6 in favor of Trine. Zimmerman was once again on the field for all 90 minutes and added two shots on goal on offense for the squad.

MIAA Names Tyler Murphy Athlete of the Week
Senior forward Tyler Murphy of Greenfield, Indiana, a member of the Trine University men's soccer team, was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week on Oct. 23. It was the seventh time in his career that he has been tabbed MIAA Athlete of the Week and Murphy was the second Trine men's soccer student-athlete to be awarded by the conference in 2023. Murphy scored one goal in each of the team's two victories on the prior week. The Thunder were winners 1-0 at Hope College on Tuesday and defeated Alma College by a score of 2-1. Murphy received a long pass from sophomore Liam Zimmerman in the team's first match that set him up for the match's only goal against the Flying Dutch. Murphy would use his speed once more to score the game's first goal against the Scots of Alma coming off a feed by sophomore Evan Komrska.

Three Named to Women's Soccer All-MIAA
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced their end of year women's soccer awards with three members of the Trine University team selected to All-MIAA status. Heading lining the trio was sophomore Abby Robison of Dayton, Ohio, who appeared as a first team member in her first season being named All-MIAA. Robison was selected as a forward after leading the team offensively through the regular season. She posted team highs in goals (9) and points (21). During MIAA play she was tied for eighth in the conference with seven points including three goals and one assist. Two members of the team were selected as second team members, making return appearances to the All-MIAA lists. Senior Olivia Butterworth of Murray, Kentucky, made her third appearance on an All-MIAA list after being named one of four midfielders on second team. Despite missing much of the non-conference season due to injury, Butterworth returned for the conference slate and made an immediate impact. She finished conference season with five points including two goals and an assist. Classmate Olivia Argentieri of East Amherst, New York, made her second appearance after earning a spot as a defender on the second team. On the offensive side of the ball Argentieri finished the season fourth on the team with eight points including two goals and four assists. Both second team members helped to create a strong defensive front for the Thunder during conference play. The team allowed just one goal per game during MIAA play while posting four shutout performances.

Miller Named MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week
Junior Troy Miller of the Trine University football team was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Special Teams Athlete of the Weekon Oct. 10 after securing the first lead of the game for team against Adrian College. It was the first time in Miller's career to earn the award. Miller of Sandusky, Ohio, made his presence known in the third quarter of the game, by coming up with a crucial punt block. After the offense came up with their second touchdown of the game to tie the contest at 14 points, the Thunder defense forced a three-and-out with Adrian setting up to punt on their own 22 yard line. Miller led the charge through the line to block the punt with the ball sailing backwards into the endzone. There sophomore Cole Dean came up with the recovery to earn the team its first lead of the day. The Thunder went on to win the contest 34-14, retaining possession of the Border Brawl trophy for another year.

Robison's Offense Earns Athlete of the Week Honors
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced Abby Robison of Dayton, Ohio, as Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 25. It is the second time this season that a Thunder student-athlete was named athlete of the week and the second time in the sophomore's career that she took home the honor. The Thunder finished the prior week with a pair of wins with Robison standing out as the main offensive contributor. She finished the week with three goals and two assists for a total of eight points. Trine began the week with a 4-0 victory over visiting Anderson (Ind.) University. Robison started the game on a tear recording two goals and an assist the first 12 minutes of the contest. She assisted on the first goal after carrying the ball through the defense then did the same a few minutes later for her first goal. She ended the opening salvo by scoring off a corner kick. The team finished their week with a 4-1 win against Dennison University. Robison assisted on the first goal of the day and then scored the eventual game-winner in the later portion of the first period.

Price Named to D3football.com Team of the Week
Trine University's Alex Price was selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week, the organization announced Sept. 19. The fifth-year senior from Reading, Michigan, was named as the the team's quarterback. It is the first time since 2018 that a member of the Thunder was named to a regular edition of the D3football.com Team of the Week. Price led an explosive offensive attack against Franklin, amassing 439 yards in the air with seven touchdowns. Both of those marks set new single-game records for the program. Price went 21-for-30 in the game for a 70% completion percentage and did not throw an interception. He saved two of his touchdowns passes for the crucial fourth quarter of the contest. The game entered that final quarter tied at 37, but Price capped the team's first two drives in the period with his final two touchdowns of the day putting the team up 51-37 and allowing them to run out the rest of the clock on the way to the victory.

Rachel Campbell Earns MIAA Volleyball Specialist of the Week Honors
Rachel Campbell of the Trine University women's volleyball team was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Volleyball Specialist of the Week for the first time in her career on Sept. 18. The junior defensive specialist from Greenfield, Indiana dominated in the back row in four wins for the Thunder. Trine was able to sweep Defiance College in non-conference action and went 3-0 over a weekend in upstate New York. The Thunder topped Oswego State University, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Grove City College 3-0, 3-0 and 3-1. In total, Campbell dug out 60 opposing attacks, good for 15 digs per match and 4.62 digs per set. She set a new career-high with 25 digs in the four-set victory over Grove City. She was also able to tally 17 assists, including eight against the Wolverines and had a pair of service aces.

Civanich Wins Sixth Career MIAA Athlete of the Week Award
Senior Mark Civanich was able to capture his sixth career Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week award on Sept. 11 thanks to a career-low round on his home course. Civanich was the individual medalist at the Ken Venturi Invitational with a round of 66 at Zollner Golf course the prior week. He was able to cap his round with birdies on holes 17 and 18 shortly after a delay for lightning in the area. In total, Civanich hit for six birdies, all coming in holes 7-18. As a team, the Thunder tied for second with NCAA Division II Wayne St. University.

Yin Repeats as MIAA Athlete of the Week
Sammy Yin of Ada, Michigan, a member of the Trine University men's tennis team, earned his second-straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week on Sept 18. It was the second time both this season and in his career that Yin was named Athlete of the Week. The freshman headlined competition at the 2023 Hope College Invite where he won the Men's A-Draw Individual tournament. After receiving a bye in the first round he won his first match against Calvin's Harrison Sindelar by the score of 8-1. In the quarterfinal round he took on a second member of the Knights and won 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals he defeated the host school's Rylan Doden with scores of 6-4, 6-0. Then in the championship he defeated Jospeph Llopis 6-4 in the first set before the opposition retired due to injury in the second set.

Yin Earns First MIAA Athlete of the Week of Year
Sammy Yin of the Trine University men's tennis team was named Athlete of the Week by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) on Sept. 11. It was the first time in the freshman's young career that he took home the distinction and the first time this season for any member of the team. Yin led the way with an undefeated 8-0 week as the Thunder finished 3-1 in dual matches. Along with partner Andrew Spirrison, Yin was perfect in No. 1 doubles with wins against Manchester, Franklin, Webster and Wooster. The same was true during singles where he also competed as the No. 1.

Fronczak Named MIAA Athlete of the Week
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced that sophomore Francesca Fronczak earned Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week honors early in the season. It was the first time this season a Thunder student-athlete wasbeen named athlete of the week and the first time in Fronczak's career that she earned the honor. Trine finished that week 1-0-1 at the Bob Baptista Invitational hosted by Wheaton College, mostly on the back of a strong defensive effort led by Fronczak and company. The Thunder began the season by battling to a 0-0 draw with the hosts from Wheaton. The defense allowed just one shot on goal and nine total in the contest to help secure the scoreless result. Then on Saturday the unit upped their game allowing zero shots against Greenville University as the team cruised to a 3-0 victory. Fronczak added to her weekend by setting up the opening and ultimately game-winning goal. She took the opening corner kick of match and placed it inside the keeper's area where teammate Andi Lipic was waiting to score the goal.

Maloney Named MIAA Athlete of the Week
Alexis Maloney was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week early in the season. It was the first time Maloney took home the award and the first time one of the Thunder won it this season. Maloney helped lead the way for the team as they opened their season with a convincing 7-2 victory over visiting Earlham College. Maloney, along with doubles partner Elina Locane, started the day with a lopsided 8-1 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. She then became one of four Thunder to finish the day undefeated sweeping her opponent in the No. 3 singles match.

Three Named GCAA All-America Scholars from Trine Men's Golf
The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) have announced the 2022-23 recipients of the All-America Scholar award. Three members of the Trine University men's golf team were honored for their efforts on the course and in the classroom this past season in senior Charlie Eriksen, junior Mark Civanich and sophomore Kyler Rod.

League-High 13 Named MCVL All-Academic from Trine Men's Volleyball
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) has announced the 2022-23 postseason academic awards. The Trine University men's volleyball team received 13 All-Academic Team honors, the most in the conference. The requirements are at least a 3.3 grade-point average and the earning of a varsity letter.

MIAA Academic Honor Roll
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced the recipients of the 2022-23 MIAA Academic Honor Roll. In total, 273 individual student-athletes at Trine University were recognized by the MIAA on the 2022-23 Academic Honor Roll, the most of any league schools. Student-athletes must reach a 3.5 grade-point average for the academic year and earn a varsity letter in an MIAA-sponsored sport to be eligible.
