Five Trine University senior business students scored in the 90th percentile or higher out of nearly 32,000 students nationwide on a national assessment test, the highest number of Trine students to perform at that level over a school year.

O'Malley Named All-MIAA In Baseball
Trine University senior baseball player Kevin O'Malley (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Central) has been selected to the All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Teams as a first-team pick for his individual efforts this season. O'Malley started all 39 games he played in this season and was second on the team in batting average at .397 with 56 hits (56-of-141). His 56 hits also ranked second on the team. He led the team in runs batted in (RBI) with 33, in addition to hitting one home run, two triples, 10 doubles and scored 21 runs. O'Malley had 18 multi-hit games with a season and career-high four hits three times and had 11 games with multiple RBI. In addition, he scored a single-game high of four runs in a win against PSU-Altoona early in the season. In the conference, O'Malley currently ranks fourth in hits (56) and third in RBI (33). He also ranks in the top-10 in triples (10th) and seventh in total bases with 73. Defensively, O'Malley had a .974 fielding percentage with 232 putouts and 30 assists as the team's starting catcher. He was also responsible for throwing out 15 potential base stealers which rank as the second most in the MIAA. For his career, O'Malley played in 103 games and made 88 starts. He finishes with a .337 lifetime batting average (104-of-309) to go along with a pair of home runs, two triples, 17 doubles, scored 44 runs and drove in 56 runs. As a catcher, O'Malley threw out 34 base stealers which rank as the third most all-time in program history. As a team, the Thunder finished one win shy of the 20-win plateau (19-21 overall) that included a four-game sweep against Hope (Mich.) College, marking the first time in program history Trine has won four straight against the Flying Dutchmen. Trine also recorded a fourth-straight season with 15 or more victories.

Barnett Is National Runner-Up in Long Jump
For the second consecutive year, junior Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Fremont-Ross) finished as national runner-up in the long jump at the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship Meet in Birmingham, Ala. Barnett sat in third place after the preliminary jumps with a best mark of 23' 4.00" (7.11 meters) with the top nine distances out of 14 competitors advancing to the finals. By his second attempt in the finals round, Barnett had dropped to fifth place before he recorded a leap of 23' 11.50" (7.30 meters) to propel him into first place going into the final round of jumps. His mark would be his best of the afternoon, but unfortunately would not end up as the best overall as his distance was bested by a competitor from St. John (N.Y.) Fisher University (24' 1.75") in the sixth and final round to finish as the runner-up in the event and also earned All-American honors in back-to-back indoor seasons. The Trine men's track & field team will now set its sights on the outdoor season which will begin with the Hanover Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 31 in Hanover, Ind. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

Heller Named MIAA "Position Player of the Week"
ANGOLA, IND. -- Trine University baseball player Jacob Heller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Prairie Heights) has been named this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Position Player of the Week." Heller helped Trine begin the 2018 season with a 5-3 record after its annual Florida spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla. Heller started all eight games and batted .625 at the plate (20-of-32) with a .781 slugging percentage to go along with five doubles, scored 12 runs and drove in 10 runs. He was also a perfect one-for-one in stolen bases. Defensively, he posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 53 putouts and four assists as the team's starting first baseman. Heller recorded multi-hit games in all but two contests during the week including a game where he finished five-of-five against Saint Vincent (Pa.) College in which he scored a pair of runs and a RBI in addition to hitting one of his five doubles. He also recorded a four-hit game (four-of-five) in a 17-1 win against New Jersey City University that included a pair of doubles, scored two runs and had four RBI. Against PSU-Altoona, Heller recorded four hits in five at-bats and scored five runs in a 22-6 blowout win. The Trine baseball team is scheduled to travel to Greencastle, Ind. for a pair of non-conference games against DePauw University and Loras (Iowa) College on Saturday, Mar. 17. Trine is scheduled to take on DePauw at 11:30 a.m., followed by Loras at 3:30 p.m.

Eight male students competed in this year's Big Man on Campus, which raised more than $12,000 to fight breast cancer. Brittani Smith, a biomedical engineering student from Indiana, chaired the event.

Hayley Martin Named MIAA Defensive Player of the Year
For the second consecutive season, Trine University senior Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Defensive Player of the Year" in women's basketball. Martin captured the same award last season as well as also repeating as first-team All-MIAA recipients. Martin has played a pivotal role in helping the Thunder to a second straight 20-win season and a second consecutive MIAA Regular-Season Championship. After missing the first three games of the season, Martin has started every game and is second on the team in scoring with 10.4 ppg. She is currently shooting 43.4 percent (89-of-205) overall and is second on the team in rebounding at 6.2 rpg.

For the second consecutive season, Trine University junior Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Most Valuable Player" in women's basketball. Dawson was also the 2016-17 MIAA "Most Valuable Player" and also repeats as first-team All-MIAA recipient. Dawson has played a pivotal role in helping the Thunder to a second straight 20-win season and a second consecutive MIAA Regular-Season Championship.

Trine University junior guard Pete Smith (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) has been named second-team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in men's basketball. Smith, who transferred to Trine prior to the start of the season, has made an immediate impact for the Thunder as the starting point guard.

Myles Copeland Earns First-Team All-MIAA Honors
Trine University junior forward Myles Copeland (Perrysburg, Ohio/Toledo St. John's) has been selected first-team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in men's basketball. Copeland has had a standout season which includes his first All-MIAA selection. He has been one of the top scoring threats for Trine throughout the season, averaging a team-best 19.8 ppg. He has scored in double figures in all but five games this season with 11 games of 20 or more points, three games of 30 or more points and a career-high 41-point effort in a win against Calvin (Mich.) College.

Maurice Hunter Named MIAA "Defensive Player of the Year"
Trine University sophomore Maurice Hunter (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Defensive Player of the Year" and was a second-team All-MIAA pick to highlight the 2017-18 All-MIAA honorees for the Thunder. It marks back-to-back seasons that the men's basketball team has had someone tabbed as "Defensive Player of the Year." Hunter has played in all 25 games so far this season and started 21. He is one of four players to average double figures in scoring with 11.0 points per game while shooting 52.5 percent (116-of-221) from the floor. He leads the team, and is third overall in the MIAA, in rebounding average at 7.3 boards per game. Hunter has recorded seven double-doubles this season, including a stretch of four straight games with 10 or more points and rebounds in a single contest. Defensively, Hunter has posted a team and league-leading 34 blocked shots. Trine will be the fourth seed in the MIAA Tournament that begins on Friday, Feb. 23. Olivet (Mich.) College will serve as host as the top-seeded team. The Thunder will take on the Comets on Friday with the game scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m. in Olivet, Mich.
